A Growing Market

Biofuels is a growth industry. Over the last 10 years biofuels production has more than tripled and demand continues to rise. Commercial transportation is facing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and biofuels provides a direct means to meet the commitments to reduce emissions. Carinata is optimized to produce fuels for commercial transportation such as diesel and jet fuels. Carinata has been used to produce a number of biofuels including traditional biodiesel, renewable diesel and biojet, powering both air and surface transportation. Since 2013 Carinata diesel fuels have been in the North American fuel supply. In 2016 Carinata diesel fuels began to be used in Europe. Carinata was the sole source of fuel for the world’s first 100% biojet flight, showcasing the unique benefits that an optimized biofuel crop brings to the industry.

The world is pushing for these cleaner fuels. One segment of the commercial transportation industry that is leading the way is the airline industry through ICAO's CORSIA scheme, airlines will aim to neutralize their carbon emissions. This means the airlines demand for high quality biojet fuel will increase drastically, as they attempt to de-carbonize.

Biofuels are currently mandated in 62 countries around the world, and demand for renewable diesel and jet fuels is the most rapidly growing segment of the renewable fuels industry. Diesel and jet fuel made from Carinata offer the best GHG savings in the industry and a path to carbon neutral fuel.

  • Renewable Diesel: Carinata oil can be converted into a high quality diesel fuel supplement. It outperforms its fossil fuel counterparts in efficiency, it burns cleaner and reduces wear and tear on an engine block.
  • First Generation Biodiesel (FAME): Extensive globally installed capacity that can use low GHG Carinata oil as feedstock.
  • Biojet Fuel (HEFA): Carinata Biojet fuel is more energy dense than it's fossil fuel counterpart. This means planes and jets can fly faster, farther and longer. The energy density increase provides an additional thrust, which is great for fighter pilots in a dog fight. The increased efficiency also lowers fuel consumption allowing for more affordable civilian aircraft flights as well
  • Green chemistry: Carinata oil is ideal for many other industrial applications, such as high performance lubricants and polymer coatings.

Why Carinata is the better Option

 

The biojet market has up to 30 billion gallons of demand that has yet to be met. The aviation industry is actively reducing its carbon footprint and biojet fuels are the cornerstone of that movement.

Biojet fuels produced from carinata oil have already been used successfully in both commercial and engineering flights, and carinata oil powered the world’s first 100% biojet fueled flight. Today many flights are powered by biojet fuels.
